INDUSTRIAL BIOMANUFACTURING LABORATORY

Practical Biomanufacturing Technologies

The Industrial Biomanufacturing Laboratory conducts research on the design, optimization, and intelligent operation of industrial manufacturing processes for the commercialization of diverse bioproducts, including pharmaceuticals, food products, and chemicals.

OUR MISSION

Scaling Biotechnologies from the Lab to Industry

Our research investigates how biotechnological phenomena observed at the laboratory scale translate to pilot- and commercial-scale production. By considering both technical feasibility and economic viability, we aim to transform research outcomes into practical biomanufacturing technologies.

RESEARCH AREAS

Research Areas

We study the entire biomanufacturing lifecycle, from understanding individual unit operations and integrated process design to process intelligence, scale-up, and techno-economic assessment.

01 · PROCESS DESIGN

Bioprocess Unit Operations & Integrated Design

We analyze individual unit operations—including fermentation, enzymatic conversion, cell separation, chromatography, evaporation, crystallization, and drying—and integrate them into complete manufacturing processes.

02 · SMART PROCESS

Process Modeling, Optimization & Intelligence

We use first-principles and machine-learning models to understand process behavior, optimize key operating conditions, and develop intelligent decision-making technologies.

03 · SCALE-UP & TEA

Bioprocess Scale-Up & Techno-Economic Assessment

We translate laboratory-scale data to pilot- and commercial-scale production and comprehensively evaluate mass balances, capital investment, manufacturing costs, and commercial feasibility.
